Best Hot Plant-Based Sides for Grilling Season
It’s easy to focus on the main dish at a BBQ—but let’s be honest: the sides often make the meal.
And when it comes to hot, satisfying, plant-based BBQ sides, there’s no shortage of delicious options. Whether you’re feeding a mixed crowd or keeping things totally vegan, these warm sides bring comfort, flavor, and that fresh-off-the-grill magic.
Here are a few of my favorite go-to hot sides that pair perfectly with any summer gathering.
Corn on the Cob
Simple, classic, and always a crowd favorite. Boil cleaned whole ears of corn for around 10 minutes then slather with vegan butter, a sprinkle of sea salt.
Grilled Potatoes with Onions
This one’s hearty and satisfying. Slice baby potatoes and onions, toss with olive oil or vegan butter, garlic, salt, pepper, and your favorite herbs. Wrap in foil packets and grill until tender—usually about 20–30 minutes.
Baked Beans
You can go homemade or grab your favorite store-bought brand (just double-check the label—some have added bacon or lard). My favorite brand is Bush’s Vegetarian Baked Bean. Look for versions labeled vegetarian or vegan, or try making your own with canned beans, tomato paste, maple syrup, mustard, and a splash of apple cider vinegar.
Plant-Based Mac & Cheese
Comfort food at its best. Whether you make a cashew-based sauce, use nutritional yeast, or a store-bought plant-based/vegan mac n cheese, this dish brings cozy vibes to the BBQ table. Add some smoked paprika or a touch of hot sauce for depth and heat.
Grilled Veggie Platter
Zucchini, bell peppers, mushrooms, red onions, and eggplant all shine on the grill. Toss in olive oil, salt, pepper, and a little balsamic vinegar before grilling for extra flavor. Serve as a colorful side or pile them high on your plate with some baked beans or corn.
Keep It Simple
Hot sides don’t have to be complicated. Many of these dishes can be prepped ahead, packed up, and reheated on the grill or stovetop when it’s time to serve. They’re cozy, satisfying, and totally plant-based—so you can feel good during and after the meal.
