The Best Plant-Based Grilling Ideas That Aren’t Burgers
Maybe you're just not in a burger mood. Or maybe you're looking for something a little lighter, fresher, or just different to throw on the grill.
Good news: there are so many satisfying, grill-friendly plant-based options that don’t require a patty. Whether you’re craving something smoky and savory or light and fresh, these ideas bring the flavor—no bun required.
Here are a few of my favorites:
Marinated Tempeh
Tempeh is a grill-season MVP—hearty, high in protein, and perfect for soaking up bold flavors.
Pro tip: Boil or soak it in boiling water for about 10 minutes before marinating. This softens the texture, reduces bitterness, and helps it absorb flavor better.
Simple Marinade:
2 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp maple syrup
1 tbsp rice vinegar
1 tbsp minced garlic
Let it marinate for at least 15–30 minutes (or overnight if you have time), then grill until golden and slightly charred. Serve in slices over a salad, in a wrap, or as your main dish.
Grilled Portobello Mushrooms
Meaty, savory, and naturally juicy—portobellos are a plant-based classic for a reason.
Brush with a splash of balsamic vinegar/glaze (or BBQ sauce), and season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Grill stem-side down first, then flip after a few minutes. These are amazing on their own, sliced over greens, or layered in a sandwich.
Veggie Kabobs
Colorful, customizable, and fun to eat—veggie skewers always feel like summer.
Try a mix of:
Zucchini
Bell peppers
Onion
Mushrooms
Canned whole potatoes
Brush with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and grill until they’re slightly caramelized and tender. You can also add marinated tofu or tempeh chunks for more staying power.
Carrot Dogs
Don’t knock it ‘til you try it! When marinated and grilled, carrots transform into a smoky, satisfying hot dog alternative.
Quick Steps:
Peel and boil whole carrots until just fork-tender.
Marinate in a mix of soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and maple syrup. Try this recipe
Grill and serve in a bun with your favorite toppings.
Plant-Based Hot Dogs + Sausages
Sometimes simple is best. There are so many great options these days if you want a quick, grillable protein without the prep.
Some go-to brands:
Field Roast Sausages – smoky, herby, and perfect with mustard + grilled onions. (My favorite are the Apple Sage kind.)
Tofurky Kielbasa or Italian Sausage – hearty and satisfying
Yves or Lightlife Smart Dogs – lighter but still tasty with classic toppings
Toss them on the grill, toast the buns, and you’re good to go.
The Bottom Line
There’s no one way to do plant-based grilling. Whether you're skipping burgers this time or just want to offer a few options, these alternatives are easy to prep, fun to share, and aligned with how you want to feel—satisfied, energized, and light.
